Laying tracks for the future

The Western Gateway was originally formed to help see how our communities can be connected through better public transport and digital connectivity.

With the core cities of Bristol and Cardiff within our geography there is a huge opportunity to connect communities across our cross border economy to increase trade and skills transfer between these economic powerhouses.

The Western Gateway has a key role to play in convening expertise to understand what could be done and build an evidence base.

In March 2023 we published an ambitious 2050 Rail Vision to understand what an ‘ideal’ national and regional rail network might look like, highlight what gaps exist and suggest ideas for a future work programme for the area.

Connecting communities to level-up access to jobs, education and opportunity

Our area has so much to shout about as home to world leading industry, high tech clusters and renowned universities. However, with pockets of deprivation, the UK’s least well-connected core city and areas of poor digital connectivity, the area faces hurdles to reaching its full potential.

By overcoming these barriers, we think we can improve our productivity to boost the UK economy as well as ensuring communities at risk of being left behind can access new opportunities.

In March 2023 we launched our ambitious Rail Vision 2050, which outlines the future of rail across South Wales and Western England and we are working with innovative tech and cyber businesses across the Western Gateway to boost digital connectivity.
