Hydrogen is a potential low carbon energy source to power transport, distribution, and shipping needs as well as decarbonise industry. The Western Gateway area is ideally placed to lead the charge in developing low carbon hydrogen as a future fuel as home to a vibrant and growing hydrogen ecosystem.

We serve as a platform to showcase the pioneering and innovative hydrogen projects within the area. Through conferences, workshops, and publications, we disseminate knowledge and insights, contributing to the global discourse on hydrogen advancements.

Built around green hydrogen, with the massive natural assets of the region providing abundant renewable energy and water, the ecosystem is poised to make a massive contribution to the UK’s response to the Climate Emergency. 

The Western Gateway understands that the needs of the hydrogen industry vary. We work with the area’s emerging hydrogen industry to access the support they need to overcome barriers and seize opportunities to thrive and innovate.

We facilitate the exchange of ideas, best practices, and innovations, the Western Gateway creates a collaborative ecosystem that accelerates hydrogen-related projects. We use our convening power to unlock the potential in the most complex issues, projects and proposals.

Priority Areas

Planning and consenting
The Western Gateway actively engages with regulatory bodies to streamline processes for hydrogen projects, ensuring a smooth transition from concept to implementation.

Policy and regulation
Acting as a unified voice, the Western Gateway advocates for hydrogen-friendly policies at both the regional and national levels, facilitating a conducive environment for the growth of the hydrogen sector across the region. Our initial focus is supporting Grid discussions and local area energy plans.

Cross-sector technical challenges
The Western Gateway collaborates with the region to solve technical and skills challenges in areas of strategic importance. By fostering an environment of interdisciplinary cooperation, we aim to overcome challenges that transcend traditional sector boundaries, propelling the hydrogen sector forward.
