Government invests in future of the Western Gateway Partnership

The Government have backed the Western Gateway’s mission to create a greener, fairer future as part of funding for pan-regional partnerships across the UK.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has renewed its commitment to the partnership through its announcement of a three-year funding package totalling £3m.

The Western Gateway partnership represents the economic powerhouse of South Wales and Western England, and brings together businesses, local authorities and research from across the area to work together to add £34 billion to the UK economy, decarbonise to reach net zero and level up communities in Wales and England.

The funding will enable the partnership to continue its work on its missions including leading the Severn Edge bid to bring the UK’s flagship fusion project to the area, driving investment in the area’s active Hydrogen Ecosystem, exploring sustainable energy in the Severn estuary and providing a vision for improved rail connections in the future.

Katherine Bennett CBE, Chair of the Western Gateway Partnership, said: “I am grateful to the minister for agreeing this funding.  Started by our local authorities and working with businesses, research and governments on both sides of the Severn, our pan-regional partnership ensures we can all work together to tackle the big challenges we all face and create long term sustainable growth.

“This funding will greatly boost our work to create growth to add £34 billion to the economy and establish our area as a Green Energy Super Cluster powering the UK’s fight against climate change. We will continue to work closely with both the UK and Welsh government to ensure best value for money on this investment.”
