Hydrogen Gateway - Drive the net zero change

9th June 2023

The Western Gateway led on Hydrogen Gateway – a national conference to turbocharge development of Hydrogen across the UK as part of a wider change to Net Zero.

Hydrogen Gateway was held at the International Convention Centre Wales in Newport on 9th June 2023 and aimed to bring together industry, businesses, Governments and the public sector from across the UK to understand how they can work together to create a greener fairer future.

Delivered in partnership with Hydrogen South West, the South Wales Industrial Cluster and the GW4 Alliance, Hydrogen Gateway included:

  • a programme of high-profile national speakers
  • a display of the best of the UK’s work to develop the hydrogen technology of the future
  • workshops to demystify and improve understanding of how hydrogen can decarbonise parts of the UK economy.
  • space to bring together large intentional corporations, small and medium size enterprises with the public sector to encourage collaborative working that can bring more clean energy into mainstream use

Hydrogen Gateway was led by the Western Gateway, the Pan-Regional Partnership for South Wales and the Western England.  Bringing together business, research and local leaders from across the area, the partnership is working to add £34bn to the economy by 2030 and reach net zero. Building on evidence from the Western Gateway Hydrogen Ecosystem and other sources, the partnership is harnessing the area’s green skills and supply chains to develop a Green Energy Super Cluster to help the UK become a leader in this sector.

This follows the UK Government confirming that Hydrogen is a key part of its plans to reach Net Zero, with aims to increase production to 10GW by 2030 and the announcement of a new national Hydrogen Champion.

Representatives from across the public and private sector were encouraged to take part to understand what happens next in the UK’s transition to Net Zero.  Discover the latest innovations, overcoming production challenges, how cities and communities are already bringing Hydrogen into use and how to create the workforce of the future.
