Severn Edge
At the heart of the Western Gateway low carbon energy supercluster, that includes new nuclear, tidal, wind and hydrogen opportunities, Severn Edge is ready to deliver a net zero future while levelling up communities and boosting the economy.
_
Severn Edge is a dual site approach to developing a Low Carbon Energy Park that brings together industry, communities, business and local communities. Supporting the development of two decommissioning nuclear power plants in Oldbury (in South Gloucestershire) and Berkeley (in Gloucestershire).
Bringing together two sites which have their own unique selling points:
Oldbury-on-Severn has 150 hectares of land which are designated in national policy as ready for nuclear development with existing assets & grid connection.
Berkeley is home to a leading University Technical College with a focus on STEM courses & cyber skills. It is also home to ground breaking research facilities which are supporting the development low carbon & renewable energy technology.
Severn Edge provides an exciting opportunity to develop a Low Carbon Energy Park with ongoing conversations with interested developers and investors. These sites provide:
- Infrastructure – transport and national grid connections with nearby cities, airports and major shipping ports.
- Industry – strong industry expertise in nuclear, renewable and hydrogen energy, alongside aerospace, robotics, construction and energy efficiency R&D.
- Expertise – 334,000+ people employed in knowledge intensive businesses and Services locally (55% of employment) and supply chains currently working with Hinkley Point C and other nationally significant energy projects.
- Support – a history of strong community and policy support for nuclear and renewable energy.

"Through our Fusion bid, we’ve been working to raise the profile of our area, leverage the great skills we have and create opportunities for local people in England and Wales and it’s testament to the success of that campaign that we are continuing to see new opportunities appear.
“... This is part of the wider work the Western Gateway is doing to promote the area as a centre for low carbon energy to help drive national efforts to reach Net Zero. We look forward to continuing our work with partners to make sure we find the best possible options for these sites.”
Katherine Bennett CBE,
Chair of the Western Gateway Partnership
Both sites have been announced by Rolls Royce as being considered potential sites for their Small Modular Reactors (SMR).
Our partners have all committed to ensuring we find the best possible use for these sites. If you would like to find out more about the sites, or would like to talk about a potential opportunity for green energy in the Western Gateway, please contact: secretariat@western-gateway.co.uk
